Tracing the Sea: An Oceanic Journey for Hermès

Barcelona, Spain

A few months ago, Hermès invited us to create a project for its store on Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona. Inspired by the depths of the Mediterranean Sea and the maison’s annual theme for 2025, “Driven by Drawing,” we began to envision a world where we could share our passion for craftsmanship and savoir-faire: the time invested, the precision, and the memory of the materials.

Through a story whose premise was to traverse the ocean, we sought to transform living materials—fiber, wood, pigments, silk—into new forms that preserve their essence through a shared pursuit of a poetic elegance that unites tradition and modernity, always open to experimentation.

Posidonia, Architect of the Mediterranean

Posidonia, our starting point. It is the essence and foundation of the entire marine ecosystem: it creates habitats, produces oxygen, and provides a home for hundreds of species of plants and animals. Our project proposes a sensory journey in which Posidonia and Mediterranean fauna engage in a dialogue with the Hermès collection, revealing hidden treasures that appear and disappear among the Posidonia, squid, and moray eels.

Unique and symbolic objects enrich the narrative of the window display: a horse reminiscent of Poseidon’s horses, a beauty chest placed next to mother-of-pearl as a nod to the Birth of Venus, silks tangled around a squid to create marine illusions, and wings printed with celestial letters that transform flying fish into talismans—a scent of the Mediterranean.

The name Posidonia evokes Poseidon. This is Neptune’s forest, which brings together a procession of memorable sentinels.

Tracing the Sea — An installation by Sagarminaga Atelier

“I’d like visitors to feel a strange, almost unconscious pull that compels them to stop. I want them to perceive the immensity and grandeur of the sea brought into the display window, and at the same time, the mystery of something that is hidden and revealed little by little, like a secret lying beneath the waves.”Gabriela Sagarminaga

The Celebration

Months of work culminated in a presentation for the guests and the Hermès family, with whom we were able to share, for the first time, the experience of exploring this imaginary ocean.

‍

A journey that began at the entrance to Barcelona’s Paseo de Gracia, where passersby stopped to admire the moving swordfish; continued through the store’s various rooms, revealing pieces that emerged amid lights and reflections, until reaching the courtyard, where, alongside the squid, we celebrated—on a late-summer night—the beauty of the ephemeral and the enduring nature of craftsmanship.

‍

That night, the Mediterranean became a drawing, a form, and a story: a space where nature and creation come together to remind us that all form arises from movement and from the attentive gaze of the observer.
